So it's summer holidays and you want to get the kids out into the great outdoors. What does your family do to get kids up and moving? Do you have games or activities to encourage active, physical play in your home? Now it's school holidays here are some tips to get those kids away from the computer screen and up and about, not only great as a family but also great for fitness ...
Play traditional playground games
Think of the games you played yourself as a kid and play them with your children. Chances are, they'll love them too! Even the youngest can enjoy the traditional games such as 'What's the time Mr Wolf'.
One of the most active of playground games must be jump rope. Who played jump rope when they were at school? Even perhaps introduce double jump rope. What a great way to keep fit plus of course great to help with coordination skills!
How about putting on some favourite tunes and dancing and singing along. Even better if you have a karaoke machine! Or if on the North Shore or Hibiscus Coast and equally as good why not enjoy great trampolining with North Shore Trampoline or cheerleading with All Stars Chearleaders
Kids love balloons at all ages. Blow up a few (make sure any breakable items are out of harms way) and enjoy chasing, bouncing, swatting and just having fun! Perhaps have a competition to see who can keep their balloon in the air the longest!
Indoor gym or Obstacle Course
Why not set up an indoor gym or obstacle course. Chairs, some rope and an array of household items can be used and you can set out a course for them to follow, perhaps with clues or items they need to collect on their way round. Perhaps time them as a competition.
Back Garden Exercises
Again you can work on the theme of a gym or obstacle course set up just as you can indoors or play ball games, have races, or play games such as tug o war or tag.
Heading out into Nature
Head out into the garden or go for a walk and try to identify the different things around you or give the kids clues to find certain things. Ask them "What could be living under this rock?" to discover insects and worms. Set challenges even quite simple like who can find the first insect or flower and they will be off! If the kids are keen on a great outdoor holiday programme and around Auckland's North Shore you really must check out Conscious Kids activities.
Make a Kite
Sticks, glue, crepe paper, a piece of fabric, string and little more is needed. You can have fun making the kite and then get out into the great outdoors and see how well you can fly it! Memories of Mary Poppins!
