Children learn from manners seen from their parents so therefore the role a parent play in teaching child manners is extremely important.
If you treat children respectfully they will learn to respect others. Talk kindly and they learn how to talk kindly to others. It is also an idea to talk to children regarding how to respond in specific situations to better prepare them for when these situations arise.
Practice politeness. Everyone in the family must practice "please" and "thank-you" policy in which, for example, no request is considered without a "please." Don't let them get away with it. If forgotten just make sure they know that you are "waiting". Use the same approach for saying "thank you."
Try to ensure your kids are always encouraged to apologise when they are sorry for something they did and it is important to ensure apologies are sincere. If they are not comfortable apologising face to face get them to write an apology note. It's up to you to ensure you use your judgment as a parent as to when an apology is appropriate.
Share with your children so they understand the importance of sharing with others. Remember to compliment them when you see them sharing with others.Emphasize the right thing to do and compliment your children when they show good manners. Praise is important so make sure you let them know how proud you are when the kids are polite.
Just be aware of your own manners and how you reflect them to your kids. If you talk with your mouth full won't your kids do the same?
When you are teaching your kids to do things make sure you don't overdo in one go. For example work on table manners one step at a time.
Keep kids healthy. Children tend to behave badly when they're tired or hungry.
Be patient! Don't expect perfection and remember the kids will make mistakes but of course learning is a trial and error process. We all learn from our mistakes.
